Spotlight on KIMS

Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) was the first center to implement the Train and Help Babies Organization’s Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) Bundle Project. 

Significant improvements were seen in healthcare outcomes in newborns affected with birth asphyxia after implementation of TaHB Bundle Project, including: 

  • Improved neonatal survival to discharge: 82% after TaHB bundle care compared to 56% with existing care
  • Less use of seizure medication: 10% after TaHB bundle care compared to 30% with existing care
  • Better overall neurodevelopmental score at follow-up: 94% after TaHB bundle care compared to 77% with existing care

Additionally, evaluation of economic burden due to birth asphyxia and evaluation of economic gains from reduced mortality revealed:

  • Lost fiscal value from mortality assessed by different economic methods averaged at USD 5.65 Billion (Rs 4716645425000)
  • Utilizing value of statistical life method, with 10% reduction in mortality, the productivity gains were of USD 1.3 Billion (Rs 108524585000)
